There are many different things that remind me of summer even on the coldest day. The taste of ice cream, the smell of sunscreen, the feeling of the sunshine on your skin and finally there are the sounds of summer. In this blog I will go over three of my family's favorite lake songs. These are the songs I recommend for anything lake. And if you're feeling the winter blues this is the play list that will take you right back to summer on the lake.

"Pontoon" by Little Big To...

Favorite Things in Big Woods 1

My favorite part of Big Woods 1:

As most of you know, house 1 is our first rental house, (hence the name house 1.) Out of all of the things in that house I love the fireplace the most. I liked to put Carrie Underwood on the record player and sit in front of the fireplace and color. Remember I was 7 when we purchased this house. I love the smooth stones that make up the fireplace. Of course I also love the rocking chairs and the bunk beds but I would be mesmerized by those stones. I couldn't...

Favorite Things In Big Woods - Sapling

My favorite part of Big Woods - the Sapling:

We bought this property pretty recently and I haven't spent as much time there as I have on our other properties. However, I love the fire pit area and the flat yard. Back at home our yard is just one giant hill so it's really nice to be able to toss around a football or play volleyball without having to chase it down a hill. Don't even get me started on riding a bike on our home driveway... On top of that at home we live in the middle of a fores...

Favorite Thing in Big Woods 3

My favorite part of Big Woods 3:

Obviously I love the windows. How could you not love the windows? After we bought this house we spent about 6 weeks working on updating it. We would often spend the entire weekend staying at the house. However one thing could not wait - the day of closing the first thing my mom did was flip the couch from looking at the stairway to looking at the windows. Almost every morning I would settle on the couch with a book and a mug of hot chocolate and read. Looki...

Favorite Thing in Big Woods 2

I thought it would be fun to talk about my favorite part of each of the Big Woods houses. We get a lot of comments from guests that they love that each house is a little different but they all seem to fit together perfectly. It's kind of like they have their own personalities.

My favorite part of Big Woods 2:

The bunk beds. Until we built this house I didn't know they had a such thing as triple bunk beds. Seriously though, how can you not love having three different levels of bunk bed t...

Don't Get Stuck Outside

How to Use the Big Woods Deadbolt Locks

One of the most asked questions we get at check- in is how to use the deadbolt lock. This guide contains step by step instructions and a video.

Enter:

* The first step of mastering the deadbolt lock is entering your code. The code was emailed to you prior to your stay and is 4 digits. Make sure that when you enter the code each number turns green. If it turns red wait for a few seconds to let the lock reset. Prior to entering your code, the knob...

The Big Woods Name

As many of you probably already know "House 1" is where Big Woods began. I was 7 when we purchased it and remember the first time I saw it; I rode with my dad on curvy M Highway in our jeep with no doors. When we got there the things I noticed were the bunk beds and the rocking chairs. I thought that the rocking chairs were so cool and the whole time dad talked to the owners I sat in them. After we bought the house, bunk beds included, we stayed often. My mom got the first 3 seasons of Little...

8 places to check out while visiting Big Woods (part 2)

This is the second part of a 2 part series. 8 best things to do near Big Woods.

4 Roaring River State Park- Roaring river is about a 20 minute drive from Big Woods Cabins. Our family absolutely loves Roaring River. We have gone for picnics and hiked the trails. My favorite trail is Deer Leap trail because it has a breathtaking view on the top. You can view the crystal clear water below and see the fish swimming in it. Roaring River is also a fish hatchery and is full of all sizes of trout....

8 places to check out while visiting Big Woods (part 1)

We often get asked for suggestions of things to do from guests staying at Big Woods Cabins. In this two part series I will share eight of my favorite. Week one will cover four places with google links so that you can find them too.

8 Holiday Island Marina- I love leaving our dock and boating to Holiday Island. We typically surf or tube our way over there and then my dad stops to get gas. I love stopping to get an orange flavored push pop! Holiday Island Marina is known for having the cheap...

Three ways to Celebrate Outdoors Month at Big Woods

In case you didn't know, June 1st is the official start of the Great Outdoors Month. Great Outdoors Week began under President Clinton in 1998, but officially became a month long holiday on June 5th of 2019, when the U.S Senate designated June 2019 as the Great Outdoors Month. The celebration is kicked off with June 1st as National Trails day. National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society.

Great Outdoor Month, can't be celebrated without Great Outdoor Day, which is on June...

Unplug

We have been working on most weekends since March to make the Big Woods Cabin feel like a home away from home. The whole family has enjoyed the brief visits we have had so far, but there are a few noticeable differences from our primary home.

For me it is the king sized bed (woohoo, we have a queen at home) and a second story. Our primary home is a single level. After the first weekend my calves hurt from climbing the stairs over and over (that's what a desk job will do to you).

I have worked on the description of our house, researched the right pictures to share, organized and reorganized household items, etc.

We have debated and talked about what would be important to someone looking for a vacation home. Drawing on our own experiences of a rental search we came up with a top five list.

1. Credible ownership with pride

To make a house feel like a home takes work. I had a jeep that over time we transformed into a wheeling rig. The Ozarks offer a great back drop to explore. The area around our cabin was quick to become our go-to place to wheel and explore. There is no better way to find out how much you love someone than to have them guide you along a sticky situation where a few inches and too much acceleration can make a big difference- or better yet put them behind the...
