Three ways to Celebrate Outdoors Month at Big Woods

  • Posted on

In case you didn’t know, June 1st is the official start of the Great Outdoors Month. Great Outdoors Week began under President Clinton in 1998,  but officially became a month long holiday on June 5th of 2019, when the U.S Senate designated June 2019 as the Great Outdoors Month. The celebration is kicked off with June 1st as National Trails day. National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society.

Great Outdoor Month, can’t be celebrated without Great Outdoor Day, which is on June 8th.  The holiday is a nationwide event coordinated by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, and  the US Forest Service. Several of the National Forests offer a ‘free of fee’ day to encourage being outdoors.

3 ways to get outdoors while at Big Woods

  1. Go Swimming. Yes it’s that simple. Hop in the pool, go take a dive in the lake. Swimming is a great way to move around AND be outdoors at the same time.

  1. Make s’mores. Each house at Big Woods offers a s’more making kit, complete with a fire pit.

  1. The Roaring river State Park offers amazing hiking trails, and fishing. The trails are free. My favorite would definitely be the Deer Lear Trail. Be sure to try it out!
